How it works
The NVS has regional exhibitions across the country. These are run and managed by the branches, and a national competition every year is hosted by one of the branches on a five-year cycle. Many organisations manage their members (friends!) in different ways. For some it’s about creating a special 'club' where members get magazines, entry to events, etc. For others it’s a way of helping people get closer to NVS services or to other members of the group. The NVS approach covers both scenarios, although free entry to events is appreciated by those who exhibit vegetables. The society has survived in an environment where plant societies have fallen by the wayside, and the Trustees are determined to improve the member experience and keep it running for the next 50+ years! As a member of the NVS you can qualify to be a nationally accredited vegetable judge. As an exhibitor your membership will allow you free access to some of the big shows around the country (Harrogate, Malvern, etc). The NVS also has a register of lecturers and speakers, and those with the necessary skills have the opportunity to join this list. The membership lists not only includes those interested in growing exhibition vegetables, but allotment and leisure gardeners, vegans and vegetarians, giant vegetable growers, fruit and herb growers and schools. After all, what's more special than taking from the garden something you’ve nurtured from seed, presenting it on a plate, with a taste far better than anything you’ll buy from a shop.
