Are ‘Discovery’ apples easy to grow and where can I buy a tree?

- H M Plummer, by email

Stefan says: I guess that you’ve probably bought the fruit of ‘Discovery’, like the taste and now want a tree of your own. I can understand this. I have a pair of espaliered ‘Discovery’ trees and love them. They are on M26 rootstocks and grow really well.

I always think of ‘Discovery’ as a modern apple, although it was raised as long ago as 1949 in Essex by a fruit farm worker called Mr Dummer as one of a number of seedlings from ‘Worcester Pearmain’. He planted the best of them in his front garden, with the help of his wife because he only had one arm. You can buy a tree from any reputable fruit nursery.
