Crocus corms I bought have already sprouted

- Margaret Tew, by email

Stefan says: You tell me your supplier says they will be all right, despite the fact that the corms look odd. They are correct, because the problem is nothing more than that they have already sprouted into growth. Plant them as soon as possible and take care not to break off the sprouts when you do so, and make sure they are pointing upwards!

I have to confess that several batches of bulbs I've bought this autumn, including daffodils, tulips and fritillaries, were also already into growth, although not quite as far as your crocus corms. I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the suppliers in that they have been faced with the strangest of conditions, probably a massive demand for bulbs and corms, and also delays in the post. But that said, it's several years since I received bulbs that really were what I would call properly dormant when they arrived.
