'Rosewarne' resurrected

-

In the October 17 issue of Garden News I was interested to read Stefan Buczacki’s answer to a question regarding agapanthus. He mentioned he repotted his wonderful ‘Rosewarne’ variety. This was my discovery while I was (until I retired) commercial nursery manager at Duchy College Rosewarne in Cornwall.

I worked for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) at Rosewarne Experimental Horticulture Station when I left school, and we grew this large-headed agapanthus as a cut flower in some trials. When I returned to Rosewarne in 1992 I found one flower in the corner of a field (the site had been closed for many years). I took the seed and grew the plants until I had enough to release on the open market, supplying the Eden Project, Heligan and many other outlets.

Thank you for the memory. Stan Williams, Facebook Simon says: What an incredible story Stan! So many plants from just one flower in the corner of a field. You (and Stefan) are correct

– it's a wonderful variety of agapanthus.
