Golden privet

Yellow variegatio­n to elevate it from the common plant. Hardy with white flowers and black berries. Appreciate­s clipping and grows to 3m (10ft). Plant two per metre (3¼ft).

Yew

A ractive evergreen conifer with red ‘berries’ in winter. Slow-growing, easy to maintain and doesn’t mind shade. Water well when growing. Plant two per metre (3¼ft).

Hawthorn

Small, fast-growing shrub with glorious flowers and autumn haws. Perfect for hedging, as it provides lots of interest and benefits for wildlife. Plant each about 30cm (1ft) apart.

Cherry laurel

An evergreen with leathery, shiny leaves that creates a pleasing, dense habit for screening. Tolerates heavy pruning, to be done in late spring. Plant two per metre (3¼ft).
