Pa erned leaves for winter

Try these glorious variegated plants for a pick-me-up

- Words Greg Loades

During the winter months evergreen plants serve as a beacon of hope in the garden. There’s something comforting about seeing lush shades of green when summer seems so far away.

Variegated evergreens (evergreens with patterned

or multi-coloured leaves) take things a step further and add patterns and decoration to the garden too, as well as structure and greenery. Perhaps the most attention that these plants get is when they’ve been clipped to provide material for Christmas decorations. This is a reminder that they’ll decorate the garden for 365 days of the year, not just the house or the front door for a couple of weeks!

Here are some ideas for using variegated plants to give the garden a permanent pick-me-up.
