OPTIMISM PREVAILS ON THE PLOT

Covid may have stopped festive gatherings in the allotment cafe but we’ve rich pickings of winter veg!

This is the usual time of year when gardening plays second fiddle to the festive season. Albie’s cafe, our meeting place on the allotments, is normally decked with Christmas baubles and decoration­s and the morning coffee is accompanie­d by a mince pie. More time than usual is spent in there and the atmosphere is jolly! Also there’s always one morning when the lower plots are devoid of gardeners, as the cafe inhabitant­s of me, Gene, Ron, Mike, Tommy, Dai and Jeff pop to a local cafe for a festive breakfast.

Not so this year as Covid still causes havoc with our lives and gardeners play by the rules. This dedicated group continue to arrive daily and banter from afar still remains, but other than Gene and Ron no one enters the cafe. Allotments have been a saviour for us all this year and we cherish

Then prune out any new growth that’s crossing or rubbing together. Simply cut one stem out completely.
