Add some welcome winter cheer!
‘Twilight’ Visit: www.gardennewsshop.co.uk
Also known as the checkerberry or partridge berry, low-growing evergreen shrub gaultheria ‘Big Berry’ is an excellent choice for containers or makes a handsome groundcovering plant for shady spots.
Bell-shaped flowers in pinkishwhite open from May to July, but ‘Big Berry’ really starts to put on a show in autumn, when it covers itself in large, aromatic, bright scarlet, fleshy berries. This display lasts through the winter.
Gaultheria prefers partial shade and will do well in full shade too, brightening up those dull spots. Soil should be neutral or a little acid, so use ericaceous compost when growing in pots. Supplied as an established plant in a 13cm (5in) pot, ready to plant out. Reaches a height and spread of 15cm (6in) x 1m (3¼ft).
