Plant a hedge Bag a bargain with seasonal discounts

-

Make a gorgeous garden feature for next year and plant up a hedge now. Perhaps you’re in the market for a bit of screening, or want to break up your garden into different rooms – either way, give yourself a planting project. A wide array of bare-root plants are on offer now, and container plants can be bought at garden centres, too. Be sure of growth rates and eventual heights, as well as how dense your chosen hedge will get, as to where you plant. As a general rule, if you’re planting a low hedge you can plant the separate plants closer together, but tall hedges need spacing further apart.

There are bargains to be had at this time of year! Particularly from bulb companies, who are selling off their collections cheaper than normal. Plus there are always Christmas selloffs – not to mention the new year sales! Give packets of bulbs as stocking fillers, or use them yourself – tulips can still go in the ground – and all bulbs can be popped in pots to spring up just as happily in a few months. However, be wary of pigeons and squirrels, who will relish your little bulbs as a great snack – net or use chicken wire to fend them off.
