MY BEEFY PLANT GETS A POT UPGRADE

-

I’ve grown a Toona sinensis (Chinese mahogany) from seed; the plant is in a plastic container and now it’s ge ing bigger I’ve decided to move it into a more decorative pot and place it in the kitchen garden. Also known as the ‘beef and onion plant’, they have foliage that tastes very similar to beef and onion crisps; earthy, onion or garlic-like, and can be cropped in spring to cook as a veg or add to salads and stir fry. I’m using a mix of topsoil, compost and manure to pot the plants on and will leave them against the side of the shed until they break into leaf as they’re pre y hardy down to -20C (-4F). ‘Pink Flamingo’ is a pink version that’s sold as an ornamental but is still edible, just not as tasty as the regular greenleaved varieties.
