Saving your own seed has been talked up a lot recently and it’s certainly an economical way to propagate plants. But while it has advantages, it’s wise to also accept its limitation­s.

Home-saved seed often fails to come true to type and, unless it’s harvested and dried carefully, the germinatio­n rate can be low. But it’s a cheap way to raise a lot of plants, and you may get some lovely surprises.
