Make the most of time on our hands

- Garden News Editor

Well, here we are once more – confined to barracks as we collectively try to beat the virus by not mixing with other people. We will do it, too. But it means everyone is facing different challenges as we try to get through it. Some people are alone, missing their wider families terribly, while others are struggling to work in their dining rooms while homeschooling their children. Everyone is going through a tough time. Last year, gardens played a vital role in the wellbeing of the nation’s health and I have no doubt they will be just as important this year. I’m delighted that garden centres and DIY stores remain open and, of course, you can get many plants and other gardening essentials online or via mail order, too. I say it a lot, but it’s at times like these that we can really appreciate our gardens for giving us so much. Places of relaxation, exercise and even spiritual wellbeing – and when we’re only otherwise allowed outside once a day, the garden takes on huge importance. This year, I think people will be a little more adventurous with their gardening; after getting outside spaces shipshape last year, now it’s time to kick on and really get some wow factor! Our feature on standout plants (page 14) is a great place to start but if there are other plants you’ve always liked the look of, give them a go! Also, good news – free seeds return on the front of Garden News next week! You’ll be able to sow them right away, too – a great job in lockdown. Have a great gardening week.
