PLANT SHALLOTS

Now’s the time to plant shallots outdoors, or start them off indoors before planting out in a few weeks. They love a sunny spot and rich, well-drained soil, which isn’t too acidic. Cultivate the bed before planting and improve the soil, incorporating well-ro ed garden compost, then let it se le for a few weeks. If the ground is very wet, consider growing in raised

beds, as they’re susceptible to onion downy mildew. Plant 15cm (6in) apart in rows 30cm (1ft) apart, with the tips of the bulbs sticking out.
