Have I planted my peony too deeply?

Stefan says: You say you were unsure how peonies should be planted so treated it like a bulb. It produced plenty of foliage, but no flowers and you wonder if you should dig it up and buy another. Many gardeners seem to have problems with peonies, in both respects, planting and non-flowering. The two may be partially related.

First, the planting. By treating it like a bulb I suspect you had in mind daffodils and tulips and, if that’s so, then you’ll have planted it too deeply. Yes, dig it up in about a month’s time, but don’t throw it away. Replant it with the soil just above the main root mass, not far below the surface. This may well have been the cause of the non-flowering but it’s also worth bearing in mind that, even when planted correctly, peonies usually take a year or so to settle down.
