How to stop rose problems now

-

■ Prune roses by the middle of February to allow healthy new growth to develop. When you cut the stems off, you’re also removing old leaves that have lingered on the plant over winter. Removing these leaves will prevent them from infecting new shoots this year.

■ Remove weeds and old fallen leaves from the base of the plant. Old diseased leaves can re-infect new ones, and weeds allowed to grow at the base of the plant will reduce the strength of roses.

■ Firm in roses that are being shaken by strong winds. Firm the soil around the base, using the ball of your foot. Top up the soil level so it covers the bulky bit at the bottom of the plant if possible.
