Tidy deciduous grasses

Many ornamental grasses look lovely now and it seems a shame to cut them, but if you want the fresh new growth of deciduous grasses to come through unimpeded, they need cu ing back hard to ground level before new green shoots emerge in spring. If the weather is very cold, delay cu ing warm-climate grasses, such as miscanthus, as the old stems will help protect the crown of the plants from frost, but cut back to emerging shoots when warmer. Evergreen grasses just need combing through.
