Can I replace my clematis with a different variety?

Peter Waterston, by email

Stefan says: Your clematis ‘Josephine’ died suddenly and you want to know if you can plant ‘Mrs Cholmondeley’ in the same place? I wouldn’t advise it. It's wise never to replant in the place where another plant of the same type died. It’s possible your original plant died from a disease called clematis wilt and this could affect the replacement, too.
