Beryl’s late-winter wonders

-

Galanthus ‘Magnet’

It has a long, delicately arching pedicel (end of the stem), so the large flower moves with the slightest breeze. Grown from a bulb. H: 20-25cm (8-10in).

Helleborus niger

Large, round, pure white, flat flowers on mounds of dark green foliage. Prefers moist, well-drained soil and an annual mulch of compost or well-rotted manure.

Crocus tommasinianus

An early flowerer, which will self-seed and looks pretty growing in a lawn. Colours range from pale lilac to reddish purple. Shade tolerant, it’s good for woodland areas.

Galanthus ‘Desdemona’

A striking, double-flowered snowdrop with green tips to the inner white petals. It has a beautiful honey scent and will grow in almost any aspect, in well-drained, moist soil.
