PROTECT FRUIT BLOSSOM FROM THE WEATHER

-

It’s not just potatoes that benefit from some protection with horticultural fleece at this time of year; so will fruit trees. Depending on the species and varieties you grow, you could soon be seeing your cherries and other fruit coming into blossom. This may be a great sight and a sign of spring, but if the blossom gets knocked by frost, your harvest can be severely affected, or even wiped out. That’s why it’s always good to have a roll of fleece to wrap around any branches to protect the blossom. Don’t try to cover the entire tree, as the fleece can act like a sail and damage the branches in the wind; simply wrap each blossomladen branch like a bandaged arm – that will do the job just fine! the drainage holes, as all the winter weather can result in them blocking up with soil. Lift them and make sure the drainage holes are free (get someone to help support them if they’re heavy) and put them on small feet or stones to aid drainage now they’ll soon be springing into life (especially gooseberries and peaches); my evergreen Chilean guava may need repotting as roots are coming out of the bottom!
