AND DON'T FORGET...
l Don’t prune too heavily as this will encourage strong growth and less fruit.
l Light pruning every winter to remove around 10-15 per cent of growth will keep the tree open and healthy and encourage replacement fruiting wood.
l Keep moving around the tree so you spot crossing branches from different angles.
l You can prune in frosty weather. Apples are completely hardy.
l If you have an overgrown tree reshape and reduce the size over three winters.
l Always use sharp secateurs, pruners and saws to make a clean cut that will heal quickly.
l And finally, if you have several trees, label them with the variety.
