Sow annuals in cells
Hardy annuals can be sown direct in the garden where they are to grow but if you have clay soil it’s easier to sow them in cell trays. Because the young plants can deal with cold weather in April and May, these can be the first seeds you sow. Hardy annuals include cornflowers, poppies, nigella, calendula and California poppies, but not nasturtiums. Many dislike rot damage so sow in cell trays to plant out without disturbance. Sow three to five seeds per cell, thinning to one to three seedlings when they germinate.
