Why do roses have thorns? We often think it’s to stop animals eating the shoots, but no. As the shoots grow up into shrubs and trees, the thorns help the plants support themselves by hooking over to the branches of their host. And that’s just one of half a dozen adaptation­s that climbing plants have developed.
