Some plants still have a lot more to give the garden but will be thwarted if you cut them back. Repeatflow­ering roses can keep blooming for at least a couple more months, whether climbers or bushes.

Also leave the flower heads of grasses and perennials with pretty stalks of seed heads such as echinops and eryngium. These will provide some good winter structure and also food for birds in winter.
