SOW MORE SPEEDY CROPS

-

Even though it’s summer there are a few speedy crops that are best sown now and will be ready for late summer or early autumn. Florence or bulb fennel can be sown directly into the garden now or into modules and planted out when large enough to handle. This delicious vegetable can be used for both the swollen stem and the leaves, which are great added to salads. I’m also sowing some watermelon radish in rows; this radish is white on the outside and green and pink in the middle, resembling a watermelon when chopped in half. When sowing, it’s best to sow thinly and keep the area well watered or the roots can be woody and the plant can bolt. However, it’s well worth sowing a few speedy varieties rather than just more lettuce!
