GET THE PLANTING RIGHT

-

Whichever rose you decide to plant in a pot, the pot needs to be at least 30cm wide and deep. Plant roses in a mix of equal parts multi-purpose compost and topsoil or soil-based John Innes compost.

Mix the compost together well before pouring some into your pot so that the base of the pot is covered.

Hold the potted rose, turn it to its side and gently tip it out of the pot. Sit the rose on the compost surface and check that the bulky part at the bottom of the rose where the stems start is at least 5cm below the rim of the pot.

Fill the gaps around the rose with the compost, firming it with your hands as you fill. Fill to leave a 3cm gap from the top of the pot so water doesn’t spill over the top of the pot when you water.

Water well so the compost is thoroughly soaked and keep the plant in a fully shaded place for the first week to help the plant settle down in a cool place away from bright, hot sun.
