Everything is blooming lovely

- Brent Noon There’s always room for one more pot plant in this Chesterfield container garden.

How quickly plants are growing and filling the garden! It’s good they’re in pots so I can move them about to ensure each has sufficient room to grow and air can get to them.

Many plants are in bloom and the three abutilons each have such exquisite flowers. Other plants showing off are hebe

‘Purple Pixie’, amsonia ‘Blue

Ice’ and osteospermums. The olive tree has so much blossom the pollen has stained the pavers a nice yellow colour!

I pruned the plum tree to maintain its shape and ensure air can get to the centre of the tree and so the fruit (I’ve got a lot more than

I first thought) are in view of the sun so they can ripen. I also pruned the pyracanthas, which I’m training to grow up and cover a fence. I’ve pruned a cotoneaster to keep it at a size right for the pot it’s in. More repotting – this month it was the turn of an Indian bean tree and Korean fir.

As much as I love hostas, I don’t like their flowers, so I regularly snip these off when they surface above the leaves. I’ve taken the daffodil, allium and tulip bulbs from their pots (after feeding for six weeks). These will now be dried before storing. While on holiday in Jersey I took home a few agapanthus and phormium seeds. Both are growing and the agapanthus is doing particularly well. There’s usually a few casualties and this month the canna, which I overwintered, showed no sign of growth so it had to go. My prized euphorbia ‘Rudolph’ got mildew so I pruned it, but maybe too much as there’s no sign of new growth. Fingers crossed.
