Care for sweetcorn

-

Sweetcorn needs to be watered frequently and thoroughly as it grows and the cobs develop and swell. Check the cobs every few days to check on their growth. When the tassels go brown and start to shrivel it’s worth looking over the cobs to see if they’re ready to pick. Pull back the ‘leaves’ at the tip so you can see the top kernels. Push your thumbnail into one to break the skin and if the juice runs out clear then the cob should be left a few more days before checking again. If the juice is milky it means they’re ready to pick. If left too long they’ll become less sweet and starchy. They’re still edible but are less tender.
