Prune back shrub roses

-

Once-blooming shrub roses can be pruned now, cutting back old, flowered stems to allow the new shoots that will bloom next year to grow. If these are grown for their hips as much as the flowers, leave this job until winter. Otherwise, most modern roses are still able to produce some more flowers later in autumn. Continue to cut away flowered stems back to just above a fully grown leaf. Water the plants in dry weather if possible. This will encourage more growth and flowers and help to reduce powdery mildew.
