Time to tidy strawberries

-

All my time has been spent of late harvesting and watering to keep it all coming, with the result that one important task I normally carry out after fruiting has been neglected. Yes, my strawberry bed has run riot and produced masses of foliage and lots of runners. This is my most important job on the plot. This foliage is removed back to the crown, bagged up and disposed of at the green recycling depot. The reason I don’t compost it is fear of fungal diseases being spread back to the plot. The bed is then weeded well and dressed with mushroom compost. While cleaning through I’ll pot on any rooted runners as spares and pass some onto other allotmenteers if they have need.
