Create new planting areas under trees

-

Spring bulb planting time is rapidly approaching so start thinking about where you’ll plant some new ones. Bulb displays under trees make colourful use of otherwise dead space and the flowers come out when deciduous trees are leafless and not casting much shade. Scatter handfuls of bulbs beneath trees and plant them where they land. Be generous because gappy bulb displays won’t have as much impact as closely planted ones. Make sure the bulbs aren’t touching and plant them twice as deep as the height of one of the bulbs that you’re going to plant. Mix grit into the planting hole if the soil is a bit on the heavy side.

Arranging all your plant pots into size order now will save you lots of time, making sowing, taking cuttings and potting on plants much easier in future. Stack them up upside down and keep them in a crate or box so that any pot of any size is at your fingertips! Remove slugs and snails and old plant material while you’re organising.
