How to deal with tomato blight

-

You can lessen the chance of blight on outdoor tomatoes by managing the plants well; removing lower leaves and sideshoots to allow for good airflow and not growing plants too close together will all help. In the greenhouse I do the same thing and also make sure not to wet the leaves on plants when watering, as this can encourage any spores to start to grow. If blight does strike and you aren’t growing resistant varieties, you’re sure to lose the crop, so you’ll need to act fast. Any ripe fruit need harvesting, while those that are almost ripe should be removed and placed in a plastic bag with a ripe banana on a windowsill; the ethylene gas released by the banana will encourage the tomatoes to ripen and become usable. Green fruit can be harvested and made into chutney – if you don’t make it why not gift them to someone who will? Otherwise they’ll need disposing of in the household waste bin along with the entire plant and any dropped leaves. And don’t grow tomatoes or potatoes in that bed next year.
