When growing tomatoes and potatoes, my five keys to success are:

■ Grow your tomatoes under cover if possible

■ Grow blight-resistant varieties

■ Don’t grow plants too close together

■ Don’t wet the leaves when watering

■ Keep plants tidy (removing yellowing leaves) There’s also a handy website called www.blightwatch.co.uk, where you can register your postcode and it will alert you when blight is starting up in your area, allowing you to take preventative measures.
