Curious climbers

-

In terms of hardy climbing plants that produce stripey flowers, clematis seems to be the leader of the pack, with a number of large-flowered hybrids with petals marked with typically darker midribs. The ever-popular 1890s variety ‘Nelly Moser’ has palest pink petals marked with candy pink in the centre. I think some more recent varieties like ‘Pamina’ is a more striking, if less pink choice. Celebrated clematis breeder Raymond Evison introduced the bold double-flowered striped form of ‘Josephine’ back in the late 1990s and it’s still hard to beat as a double. Much more recently, in 2021, he introduced ‘Duchess of Cornwall’ with single indigo-blue flowers and purple central stripes. I think more striped forms will be introduced in the near future.
