Fiery-coloured crocosmia

-

Crocosmias are just coming into their own. Their fiery colours are ideal as an under storey among the paddle-shaped leaves of canna and hedychiums. They mingle joyfully with dahlias, heleniums and kniphofia. In our rich, heavy clay crocosmias need to be split every second year. Old corms are discarded and only the top corm retained. Before planting, the ground is enriched with good compost to maintain soil fertility and help the corms to produce substantial flowers. New varieties are bulked up in a nursery bed until we have enough to make a real splash. There’s no point in planting crocosmia discreetly!
