GROWING MINI CARROTS FOR AUTUMN

-

One of my favourite ways to grow carrots is in buckets as they can be moved undercover or raised up off the ground to prevent carrot root fly damage. I’m sowing some ‘Amsterdam Forcing’ in a mix of compost and sand, then keeping them in the greenhouse to try and force them along. It’s a little late to sow this variety for full-size carrots, but I only want small, finger-long roots in autumn, so this should do the trick. You can also sow direct in the ground as long as you have a cloche handy later in the year to help protect the small plants. I’m also scattering an autumn mix of green manures over a couple of empty beds. This should help keep weeds down and add goodness when I dig it back into the ground in spring.
