Lottery boost for young workers
Seventy paid placements in the natural heritage sector have been created for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds following a £2 million investment by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The New to Nature project, launched as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, will see young people aged 18-25 given new, fulltime, temporary jobs in nature and landscape organisations across the UK. Working with a range of organisations, New To Nature will target those who may not have considered a career in natural heritage and may need support to find work. Currently, people from minority ethnic backgrounds make up just 3.1 per cent of the environment sector’s workforce.
