PEATLAND RESTORATION RECEIVES MILLIONS
Natural England has awarded £11 million to six projects supporting restoration work on more than 7,000 hectares of upland and lowland peatland.
Projects include the upland Great North Bog and lowland Somerset Peatland.
“Bogs may take between 10-50 years to fully regenerate,” said Natural England restoration ecologist Dr Paul Thomas. “Once peat is rewetted carbon emission is halted, due to the high acidity of the water and the peculiar physical properties of sphagnum moss.”
