How can I grow dill successfully?

- Graham Jeffery, by email

Stefan says: You want to grow dill for the seeds and to make the plant bushy. But every time, the plant grows tall and flower heads appear. You say you start off the plants in a seed tray and then transplant them. You’ve tried cutting off the tops but the plants just stop growing or die.

I’m puzzled by your query, because you say you’re growing the plants for seed and yet are concerned because flowers appear. If you leave the flowers on instead of cutting them off, the plants will set seed and you should cut off the seeding heads and hang them upside down in paper bags until they are ripe and drop. If you want a bushy plant, then pinch them back but you’re then less likely to have any flowers, and, of course, no seeds.
