Show-stealing nerines
Any time now, the first buds of nerines will open to reveal their iridescent petals. Not so much a gentle opening, more a bursting forth with petals of shocking pink, fluorescent red and vivid coral, they steal the show, injecting glamour into the late-summer scene. We have a number of plants of Amaryllis belladonna, too, originally grown from seed but now fine, fat bulbs, their flowers are bigger on strong, dark stems. We’ve also got a few amarines, a cross between the two and the best characteristics of both parents; strength and vigour from amaryllis and hardiness from Nerine bowdenii. The only trouble is we’re running out of sunny spots to plant them all out!
