What is wrong with my French beans?

- Mary Chriscoli, by email

Stefan says: Your photograph is of yellowed leaves but I’m afraid I couldn’t see enough of the plant for me to judge if there was anything seriously amiss. The foliage in the background appears green and the plant otherwise seems healthy. My own French beans regularly display a few yellowed leaves like this and they’re nothing to worry about. I could see no pest or disease problems on yours.

However, your query gives me an opportunity to extol the virtues of climbing French beans, which took the place of dwarf French beans in my kitchen garden some years ago. The dwarf varieties are fiddly to pick, take up room and drape in the mud. Climbing French beans, by contrast, are wonderful, are economical of space, easy to pick and go on and on cropping. But whichever varieties you grow, be sure to include the green pencil-podded ‘Cobra’.
