How to establish your tree and keep it going

-

Getting going

Choose a good quality tree from a reputable supplier that’s not pot-bound and ensure the tree won’t outgrow its space. Buy a small tree as it will establish better than a fully mature one. Water new trees really well, but ensure they’re planted in well-draining soil.

Maintenance

In a tree’s second year of growth, apply a general fertiliser to the root area. Water young trees thoroughly but leave off after their second year. Weed the ground nearby well and mulch in late winter with leaf mould or bark. Check tree ties and stakes regularly, and remove ground suckers as you see them.

Planting

Dig a hole three times as wide but the same depth as the tree’s rootball and soak the rootball before planting. Loosen roots and place in the hole level with the surface. Water well, mulch and stake if necessary.

Pruning

Initial pruning of young trees involves removing weak, damaged and congested branches and ensuring there’s a general good shape overall. Gradually remove the lowest sideshoots from the main stem as the tree grows, establishing a good trunk.
