FRUIT FOR THOSE IN THE KNOW

-

My last sowing of radishes has been a bit of a disaster this year, with slugs damaging every single root! It’s one of the risks you take when sowing later in the season, especially if it’s a wet, warm autumn. Usually I manage to get a couple of meals worth, but not this year. I’ll be adding these roots to the compost heap and sowing a week or two earlier next year, hopefully solving the problem. I’m also harvesting fruit from my Cornus kousa! These unusual fruits taste like persimmon, with a custard-like texture, and can be eaten fresh from the plant before the frost catches them. Most commonly grown as an ornamental, this sweet fruit is a bonus for any gardener in the know!
