Clear away tomato plants

-

Cold nights and misty mornings prevent tomatoes from ripening and encourage moulds and fungi and, for most of us, it means tomato plants should be cleared away and composted. Pull up plants with their roots. Any ripe fruits can be eaten or preserved. Mature green fruits can be placed on the windowsill to ripen and the rest made into chutney. If they were grown in pots or growing bags the compost can be spread on the soil as a mulch or can be used to fill pots planted with bulbs and bedding for spring.
