How can I get rid of suckers from an aspen tree I had removed?
Max Rathmell, Bradford, West Yorkshire
Stefan says: Last year you had an aspen (Populus tremula) tree cut down in the paddock at the side of your house and believe you’ve killed the stump. However, dozens of suckers have since appeared up to 30m away from the stump and you have nightmare visions of them all becoming saplings and then trees.
You’ve tried spraying the suckers with SBK weedkiller but with limited success. I can understand why you’ve chosen this product because it’s formulated not to harm grass and I don’t pretend there’s a simple answer, but I would try a glyphosate-based weedkiller where the suckers are away from the grass and use repeated mowing in the paddock.
