Check tree ties

-

As trees grow their trunks increase in girth, and the ‘living’ part of the tree is just below the bark. This is why it’s important to support trees with rubber tree ties or something soft so they don’t cut into it. Wire can easily cut into the bark if it’s not removed before it gets too tight. If the tree has been planted for a few years and the tie needs checking or loosened, it’s also worth checking the state of the stake, too, and if it’s rotten, you can remove it. The trunk won’t expand over winter so now’s the perfect time to check ties and loosen them if required.
