What can you tell me about a rose called ‘Special Day’?

-

Anne Oglesby, Matlock, Derbyshire

Stefan says: You say you bought the rose from a garden centre. It has a label saying it’s called ‘Special Day’ and that it’s a bush rose grown in the UK, but your exhaustive enquiries on the internet have revealed nothing about it.

I’m pleased you’ve given me the chance to say a little about this rather lovely new rose, of which you must have bought one of the first few as it’s only been marketed so far as a small trial batch. However, it’s expected to be much more widely available next year.

It was bred in Germany by the celebrated breeder Reinhard Noack, who raised the wellknown ‘Flower Carpet’ range, and is a wonderfully coloured floribunda, cream-white with a hint of soft ochre and good fragrance. The flowers are unusually large for a floribunda. You might find more about it if you search under its original German name ‘Hermann Hesse’.
