Rosa roxburghii

-

You might know this as the chestnut rose because of the large, showy hips covered in prickles. These follow the 8cm-wide, attractive pink flowers that fade to white as they age. They’re not fragrant and there’s just one flush of blooms, but they’re pretty and set off against feathery foliage on a large, spreading shrub. The hips rarely ripen to red but unusually remain lime green or orange. It’s easy to maintain and not usually bothered by disease. Height: 2m. Try with a late-flowering clematis such as C. orientalis or C. viticella ‘Kermesina’ for a profusion of pink.
