Tidy borders

-

Although it’s good for wildlife to allow some seed heads and old flower stems to remain on plants, there are advantages to clearing most of the border. It gives you a chance to get rid of seedling weeds, which will rush to bloom in spring, and you can spread a mulch over the soil, protecting it from winter rain and protecting the crowns of tender plants. It’s also much easier to work on the border now if there are bulbs planted than in spring when shoots can be easily damaged. Also lift and divide any overgrown perennials, apart from tender plants and grasses, which should be left until spring.
