Cut down asparagus

-

Asparagus is a perennial plant with frothy, ferny foliage, which is a beautiful architectural feature in the garden, but once hues turn from green to yellow it’s time to chop stems down. With a pair of snips, cut the plant down to its base, just above soil level. But don’t be hasty; while the foliage is green the plant is still photosynthesising, so leave it until your plant has died back. Waste material can be composted but be a bit cautious as pests could linger or have laid eggs. Mulch the asparagus bed to protect the dormant crowns over winter.
