Tulips are a surefire winner

- Garden News Editor

There’s something about planting spring bulbs that gladdens the heart; as we head into those long, darker, colder months, they’re a timely reminder it really isn’t so far off before we’re all enjoying some sunshine again. Tulips particularly fit this bill as we can plant them a little later than other bulbs, so when the weather starts to get distinctly grim (right now I’m looking out of the window at torrential rain!) it’s rather nice to look ahead to next year!

On page 14 we take a look at different ways you can use tulips – they’re a remarkably versatile flower when you think about it. Without fail I buy too many bulbs and always shove some in whatever pots I can locate in the depths of the shed – and without fail they reward me in April and May with a riot of colour.

Also, as the weather dictates we spend less time in the garden right now, turn to page 18 for our guide to houseplants you can’t kill! We all know someone who claims they can’t keep anything alive indoors so maybe these suggestions can act as inspiration for a Christmas present – and if they do manage to let them die we’ll think of something else for next year!

Even on these gloomy days there are plenty of things we can do that keep us active and give us cause to look ahead with optimism. Our news story on page 4 about how gardening might be prescribed for its health benefits is just as apt now as at any time of the year, maybe even more so. There are few pastimes that are better for both mind and body.

Have a great gardening week!
